How I Wound Up With Boring White Dishes // Navy Polka Dot Dress + Neon Yellow Sweater

Instagram sent me a memory notification the other day that I had my bridal shower exactly two years ago. It's crazy how much time has flown, but it got me thinking about the whole engagement process. It was pretty stressful, especially because we crammed all the wedding prep into 3 months, but the stress seeped into even the fun parts of engaged life, like registering for gifts.

We were both SO excited about registering and our eyes literally lit up when the Bed, Bath, & Beyond employee handed us our price guns. It was all fun and games during the first hour, but then we started disagreeing on what we actually needed, which turned into a color war over our dairy dishes! I'm the one who decorates our home, cooks the food, and actually cares what the silverware looks like, but my husband started to get frustrated that I was making all the decisions, so he decided to pipe up about the plates.

I was planning on getting the most beautiful, floral painted Anthropologie plates, but after choosing basically everything else, I caved and let my husband choose a set of boring white ones. We’ve been using those dishes for almost two years now and every once in a while, I mourn the flower ones we never had.

Anyway, my husband and I were talking one night when I brought up The Plates and how our compromise led us to having a set of 8 boring white ones when he responded, “Oh, I don’t even remember which ones I picked out. I honestly wouldn't have noticed if you brought home something else.” LOL

But that’s the truth. My husband really doesn't care what the dishes look like or that all our throw blankets are pink. He doesn’t care that I furnished our foyer with the world’s most impractical white fur chair or that I display my purses in the living room. What he does care about is being heard and having his opinion valued.

Moral of the story, when your man argues that he only wants the white plates, listen to him, respond, and compliment his awesome taste... Then ask him if it’s cool to get the other ones.
