Floral Cold Shoulder Maxi Dress + Espadrille Wedges // My Top 3 Rules Of Business

Blogging may seem like all fun and no work, but there’s a huge business aspect that goes into running a successful blog. I am by no means a master of the business and my negotiation skills could use some work, but over the five years that I’ve been running EstherSanter.com, these are the three rules I’ve stuck to that have helped me grow as a businesswoman.

  1. Only Do Business Over Email.
    The only way I do business is over email. Communicating via email promotes clarity and professionalism. It also serves as written evidence for every business aspect discussed. Even after a phone meeting, I always ask for email confirmation of everything we agreed, because otherwise details could be forgotten or misconstrued.

    When a company asks me for my number so they can text me product images or keep in touch throughout the partnership, I cringe. That is giving companies a direct line to reach you at any time of the day with the expectation of an immediate response. I made the mistake of giving a company my number once (for product delivery purposes). The company proceeded to text me multiple times throughout the collaboration, following up to see if the size they sent worked, asking me when I plan to post, and sending me additional images of pieces they wanted me to promote. I answered each text requesting them to email me, to which they would respond with, “One last question.” Never again.
     

  2. Answer Timely and Professionally.
    In order to maintain strong business relationships, you must be responsive. I say answer every email within 24-48 hours. It’s not always easy, but it’s important, and when you respond, make sure to stay concise and professional. Even if a brand is being completely irrational, it is never in your best interest to respond with attitude. The industry is small and everyone talks. Your reputation is everything in this business, so always maintain a level of professionalism and respond in kind.
     

  3. Under Promise, Over Deliver.
    I didn’t make this one up, but if you stick to that rule, you’ll not only retain current clients, but you’ll also build yourself an incredible business reputation. The end goal of every collaboration should be to make your client happy and to help them achieve their goals. The best way to do that is to first discuss what it is they’re hoping to accomplish from your partnership. Once you have an understanding of that, work harder than ever to make it happen and do your best to outperform their expectations. Maybe that means throwing in a few extra Instagram Stories, free of charge, or creating an image that shows their product in a thoughtful and creative way.
