How to Dress Like a Local in LA

If you’re planning a trip to Los Angeles, you may well be worrying about what you’re going to wear while you’re there. After all, it’s the celebrity capital of the world, and everybody is obsessed with fashion, extreme fitness and cosmetic enhancements, right? Well, not exactly. It’s true that there are plenty of movie and music stars around as well as stylish and attractive locals, but the city is home to millions of people from all walks of life who embrace a range of styles. If you are someone who likes to fit in with the local fashion scene, however, here are some key tips to help you with your packing.

Everyday Sightseeing: Go Casual

You might be surprised to know that many LA locals have a very casual look for much of the day (when not heading to work). Being active is a big part of everyday life in LA from exercising in the park or the beach to hiking in the fantastic landscape. This is why you’ll see a lot of people going about their daily errands in high-end activewear and gym clothes, including sneakers and yoga pants.

Casual is best when you’re out during the day so don’t worry about wearing your comfy jeans and t-shirt, as long as you’ve got high-quality pieces. Whether you’re out seeing the sights or you’ve bought tickets at for a football game, cool, comfortable and confident is the look you’re going for.

Nights Out: Go All Out

After sunset in LA, however, it’s a different matter as LA locals will put in a lot of effort when they go out at night. Of course, your outfits will need to be appropriate to where you’re headed. For example, if you’re grabbing a slice of pizza and some beer, you will probably want to keep things cool and comfortable as you did during the day. However, clubs, bars and restaurants usually expect a little more effort, including cocktail dresses, smart jeans, pantsuits and tailored suits.

Follow Fashion, or Be Unique

While style and class are synonymous with LA locals, it’s also a great place to be a little out there. Fashion trends are a big thing in LA so you will often see people wearing outfits which wouldn’t look out of place on a runway. On the other hand, LA is a place which embraces self-expression and individuality so if you’re someone who likes to do things a bit differently; this is the perfect place to wear just whatever you want and make a statement.

Accessories Are a Must

It’s important not to overlook the accessories when you’re in LA as often they are seen as just as important as any other element of your outfit. Sunglasses are a practical necessity for coping with the sunny days while a brimmed hat will also help, but try to make sure they are coordinated with the rest of your outfit. Scarves, statement jewelry, crossbody bags and stylish boots, sandals or sneakers all count in the eyes of LA locals, so make them a priority.
